QPR, Wrexham target out-of-contract Portsmouth ace

QPR, Wrexham and Birmingham City are all keen on Portsmouth midfielder Joe Morrell, reporter Phil Cadden has said.

QPR and Portsmouth will be playing Championship football next season while Wrexham and Birmingham City are widely tipped to battle it out towards the top end of League One.

The Red Dragons and the Blues are sure to target some eye-catching signings. Both are strongly backed financially, so expect some eye-catching additions from them this summer.

Now, it has been claimed the League One pair are alongside QPR in eyeing Joe Morrell.

As per reporter Phil Cadden, the R’s are alongside Wrexham and Birmingham City in holding an interest in the Wales midfielder as his deal with Portsmouth nears expiry.

Morrell has struggled with injuries at Fratton Park but when fit, he’s been a valuable asset in the middle of the park. His experience in the Championship had many expecting him to be retained this summer, but Pompey have opted against triggering a contract extension, although talks have continued.

As interest emerges elsewhere and his contract winds down, Cadden notes that he now looks likely depart.

Who is this?

A smart signing

Morrell may well have options in the Championship and League One for next season. He would be a smart signing for any of QPR, Wrexham or Birmingham City.

From the Rs’ perspective, they’d be getting a midfielder who has starred in the third-tier and when at his best, he’s certainly a Championship-level player. On a free transfer, it would be a shrewd addition for Marti Cifuentes.

As for the Red Dragons and the Blues, they would be getting a League One winner with vast experience at the level and internationally. If he stays in the third-tier, Morrell could become a real asset in the middle of the park.

Of course though, only time will tell what decision he comes to as he weighs up his options.

An odd move from Pompey?

As touched on before, Morrell has had his injury problems and availability hasn’t always been guaranteed in his time at Portsmouth. However, when fit, he was a real asset in the middle of the park and can manage the step up to the Championship too.

Morrell assumed the captaincy in Marlon Pack’s absence on occasion, operating comfortably in a defensive midfield role or slightly further forward as a central midfielder.

He’s a good age at 27 too, so it would not be a surprise to see him playing Championship football next season even if he does move on from Pompey.

Ambitious and wealthy League One clubs like Wrexham and Birmingham City could tempt him into staying in the third-tier though. Until then, it remains to be seen just what comes of his Fratton Park contract situation.
