Ajax set sights on potential Burnley transfer swoop

Burnley striker Wout Weghorst is emerging as a potential target for Dutch giants Ajax, as per a report from The Telegraph.

Burnley will see striker Weghorst return to the club again this summer following the end of another temporary spell away from Turf Moor.

The 31-year-old spent the 2023/24 season in Germany with Bundesliga side Hoffenheim. He notched seven goals and four assists in 30 games and is now playing for the Netherlands at EURO 2024.

Weghorst got his country off to the perfect start too, scoring instantly after coming off the bench to beat Poland 2-1.

Now though, rumours over the towering striker’s Burnley future have emerged.

A report from The Telegraph claims that Dutch giants Ajax are considering the possibility of a cut-price swoop for Weghorst as he prepares to return to Lancashire. A year remains on his deal with the Clarets and after relegation to the Championship, it seems highly unlikely that he stayes.

Ajax could offer him a route out with a return to the Eredivisie, a level Weghorst hasn’t played at since 2018.

Who is this?

Best for all?

After three loan spells away from Burnley, it feels like the time has come for Weghorst to move on for good.

He spent the first half of the 2022/23 campaign with Besiktas before a surprise switch to Manchester United, where he returned two goals and three assists in 31 games. Meanwhile, the Clarets had won promotion back from the Championship.

Weghorst didn’t figure in the plans of Vincent Kompany though, leading to his Hoffenheim switch.

As he enters the last year of his deal with the Lancashire outfit, Weghorst’s signing is one that will ultimately go down as a failure. He was signed to be their saviour in January 2022 but with two goals and three assists in 20 games, the Dutchman didn’t hit the heights expected of him.

He’s shown he can be an asset elsewhere though, so it’s not a surprise someone like Ajax is showing an interest.

Wishing him well at EURO 2024

If Weghorst can enjoy a strong run at EURO 2024, that could see his price tag increase over the summer.

He netted swiftly off the bench in his maiden outing and with some more eye-catching appearances for his country, Weghorst’s stock could increase further ahead of a likely exit.

That might help Burnley recoup a bit more of the £12m they paid to sign him from VfL Wolfsburg. A fee likely won’t be close to that, but any funds will be welcomed given that he could leave for nothing next summer if a permanent deal isn’t struck this year.
