Blackburn Rovers, QPR to miss out as League One club near defender deal

Blackburn Rovers and QPR are among the sides set for disappointment as Peterborough United look set to wrap up a deal for George Nevett, as per Fabrizio Romano.

Blackburn Rovers, QPR, Millwall and Peterborough United were all among the sides linked with Rochdale prospect George Nevett last week.

HITC Sport claimed the 18-year-old defender has drawn attention from both the EFL and the Premier League. Promotion winners Ipswich Town and Southampton were also said keen, as were Crystal Palace.

Nevett has become a regular at Rochdale in the National League, playing 34 times last season.

Now though, it seems a winner has emerged in the fight for his signature, and Blackburn Rovers and QPR are among those set for disappointment.

Writing on X, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano states that Peterborough United have won the race to bring Nevett in this summer. A medical is set to take place on Tuesday morning, when he will also put pen to paper on a long-term deal.

It looks to be another eye-catching coup for the Posh, who are renowned for their recruitment of young talents.

Who is this?

A big step up

Nevett may have had options in the Championship with Blackburn Rovers, QPR and Millwall and even in the Premier League. However, a move to League One marks a big step up in competition anyway.

It’s one the 18-year-old will be widely backed to make having made a fantastic impression in his breakthrough at Spotland. Nevett has earned international recognition for his displays, with Wales bringing him into their youth setup.

Interestingly, it seems as though he could come straight into the first-team with Peterborough United too.

Romano states that manager Darren Ferguson sees him as part of the senior plans, and with a need for centre-back recruits, Nevett looks set for a shot at making a starting spot his own heading into the 2024/25 campaign.

Perhaps he comes in as a like-for-like replacement for Ronnie Edwards, who is widely tipped to move up the leagues having cemented himself as one of the EFL’s brightest defensive prospects.

Looking elsewhere

As for other admirers Blackburn Rovers, QPR and Millwall, they’ll have to turn elsewhere in their hunt for a new defensive prospect as Nevett heads for London Road.

It will be disappointing to see a promising target head elsewhere but at 18, perhaps Nevett would have been more of a development signing for those Championship sides.

Of course, first-team signings will be the priority for Rovers, the R’s and the Lions. They’ll be looking to take the chance to bring in stars for the future where possible though, and Nevett looks to be one they’ll have to cross off the list.
