Birmingham City keen on Hull City man as summer sale awaits

Birmingham City hold an interest in Hull City goalkeeper Ryan Allsop, as per a report from Birmingham Live.

Birmingham City are heading for League One and will be determined to bounce back at the first time of asking to rejoin Hull City in the Championship.

A dismal 2023/24 campaign saw the Blues relegated from the third-tier, while the Tigers fell just short of the play-offs. Despite the progress made though, City parted ways with Liam Rosenior and replaced him with Tim Walter.

The change in manager could see some players move on, and it has been reported that Hull City could sanction an exit for goalkeeper Ryan Allsop.

Now, Birmingham Live reports that Birmingham City are taking an interest in the 32-year-old.

The Blues are in the market for at least one ‘keeper this summer with Neil Etheridge being released. As John Ruddy considers his options ahead of his contract expiry, it could be that two new shot-stoppers are on Chris Davies’ shopping list.

As such, Allsop is one on the radar as they look for a goalkeeper comfortable with the ball at his feet.

Who is this?

On the move

Amid the managerial change at Hull City, it seems Allsop is one who could be heading out the exit door.

He only signed last summer but having penned a two-year deal upon arrival, a move this summer allows the Tigers to recoup a fee for the goalkeeper. He managed to keep 10 clean sheets in his 38 outings for the club after joining from Championship rivals Cardiff City.

Allsop has a vast amount of Championship and League One experience to his name. He’s played over 150 times in the second-tier and is just four short of that total in the third-tier.

At 32, he offers experience in goal and can be a commanding leader at the back while offering more on the ball than recent options Ruddy and Etheridge.

The Tigers’ goalkeeping options

Should Allsop move on, it will be interesting to see who emerges as new boss Walter’s go-to man in goal.

Winter signing Ivor Pandur will be looking to stake a claim for the spot with Matt Ingram the other option currently on the books. Should Allsop move on to Birmingham City or elsewhere, another ‘keeper will likely be targeted, though it will be intriguing to see if a cover option is signed or if stronger player is brought in to battle for the starting role.

Hull City have spent well ever since Acun Ilicali’s takeover, so that will more than likely continue this summer as they look to push for promotion under their new boss.

A 7th place finish under Rosenior wasn’t enough to keep him in his role, so Walter will be under pressure to impress.
