Big obstacle impacts Sheffield United pursuit of Championship defender

Sheffield United have been unable to commit to an offer for Luton Town man Gabriel Osho because of ongoing takeover talks, reporter Alan Nixon has said.

Sheffield United and Luton Town are both coming back down to the Championship at the first time of asking after failing to stave off relegation from the Premier League.

The Blades endured a dismal season back in the top-flight and have a big task ahead to prepare for the new season.

As for the Hatters, they made a good fist of it in the Premier League when many expected them to seriously struggle. Ultimately though, their fate was secured before the final day.

Now, amid reports that defender Gabriel Osho could swap Kenilworth Road for Sheffield United, fresh claims over the Bramall Lane club’s pursuit have emerged from reporter Alan Nixon.

Writing on his Patreon, Nixon states the Blades’ bid to sign Osho on a free transfer has been impacted by takeover talks. It has meant they haven’t been able to commit to a contract offer and he could opt to stay with Luton Town or move elsewhere.

Who is this?

An unwanted headache

The Sheffield United takeover saga has rumbled on for a while and coming into this summer, it looks to be causing problems already with Nixon describing it as a ‘major hurdle’.

He notes how it has prevented them from making a suitable offer for Preston’s Alan Browne too.

Osho would be a great coup for the Blades if he is to leave Luton Town. He has impressed in the Championship before and put in some great displays in the Premier League too, so he’d be a fine free transfer signing.

However, with things as they are, it seems unlikely that Sheffield United will make a breakthrough.

Their stuttering pursuit should give the Hatters an increased hope of keeping Osho, but if he does have his sights set on an exit, it will bring other admirers into play as well.

The Blades backline

Wilder will have the task of revamping his Sheffield United defence this summer. That’s not necessarily a bad thing either given how leaky they were last season.

Club stalwart Chris Basham is already confirmed to be among those moving on. John Egan’s future remains up in the air too with contract talks ongoing.

If they are to leave, that would mean Anel Ahmedhodzic, Auston Trusty and Jack Robinson are the only senior centre-backs on the books. Even then, Ahmedhodzic seems like a likely candidate for a summer exit given how he has starred in the Championship before.

A move for someone like Osho would be smart business but even if they are able to strike a deal, Wilder’s centre-back business would be far from over with a revamp looking likely.
