QPR consider move for 25-year-old Premier League man

QPR are considering Bournemouth ‘keeper Mark Travers as a potential replacement for Asmir Begovic, Darren Witcoop has said.

QPR may well be in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer with question marks surrounding the future of starting shot-stopper Asmir Begovic.

The one-year deal he signed upon arrival is up at the end of this month and there has been interest from a number of clubs in the market for an experienced ‘keeper.

The R’s are sure to be prepared in the event the Bosnian does move on and now, a potential target has emerged in fresh reports.

Writing on X, Darren Witcoop has said the name of Bournemouth goalkeeper Mark Travers has been mentioned in discussions over who could take Begovic’s place in the QPR XI. He stresses the saga over the ex-Chelsea man is not over, but Travers is a potential replacement.

Travers spent a short spell with Stoke City last season before being recalled to cover with the Cherries. The 25-year-old started four of the last five Premier League games, keeping two clean sheets.

Who is this?

A solid replacement

If Begovic is going to move on from QPR at the end of his contract, the club will be sure to act fast in their efforts to bring in a replacement.

The exit of Jordan Archer means Joe Walsh would be the only senior goalkeeper on the books in West London. He put in a decent performance on the final day, but entrusting him with the starting spot regularly seems unlikely.

That’s where someone like Travers would come in, offering a more experienced option in goal.

The Irish ‘keeper has played 59 times in the Championship overall, keeping 22 clean sheets. Travers has also been tested in the top-flight, so he’s got some good pedigree to his name despite being only 25 still.

He’s benefitted from loans away before, though it remains to be seen whether QPR would be eyeing a temporary deal or if they want their Begovic heir to be in on a long-term deal.

Wait and see

While QPR may have potential replacements in mind, they won’t be acting on any interest until the fate of Begovic is confirmed.

His future remains up in the air but it is firmly in his hands, so time will tell just what his decision is. He has options away from Loftus Road but he could yet remain at the club that gave him a return to starting football after a few seasons as a backup.

It shouldn’t be long before his fate is confirmed at least. The transfer window is open and his deal officially expires at the end of the month, so it will be then at latest that the R’s get confirmation of his fate.

Should Begovic depart, it might not be long before QPR act on their interest in Travers and other possible replacements.
