MK Dons lead Burton Albion in the chase for Accrington Stanley star Tommy Leigh, reporter Alan Nixon has said on his Patreon.

MK Dons will be playing League Two football again after falling short in the play-offs.

After a strong season under Mike Williamson, the Dons were simply blown away by Crawley Town, who would go on to win their Wembley final to book a place in League One for next season.

It was a pretty crushing outcome for MK, but attention now turns to the summer transfer window as they look to remove all doubt next time around by earning one of the three automatic promotion spots back to the third-tier.

Now, as per reporter Alan Nixon, they’re leading League One opposition in the chase of Tommy Leigh.

The journalist has said on his Patreon that MK Dons could be able to put together a better package for the Accrington Stanley midfielder than Burton Albion, who have been in talks over a deal.

Stanley are keen to reach a resolution as the 24-year-old enters the last year of his contract.

Who is this?

On the move?

It was perhaps a surprise that Leigh didn’t get a move from Accrington Stanley last summer having impressed despite their relegation to League Two.

The Portsmouth-born midfielder, who can operate in a range of midfield roles as well as up top, notched 12 goals and four assists in the 2022/23 campaign. Leigh then followed that up with eight goals and four assists last time around.

He’s got a year left on his Stanley deal, so the club are better off cashing in now rather than running the risk of losing him for nothing next summer.

A move to MK Dons would give Leigh a deserved chance with a more upwardly mobile club, though Burton Albion could offer him a jump straight back to League One if they can put a solid deal together.

A strong signing for MK

It remains to be seen whether or not Williamson and co can get Leigh to Stadium MK, but this latest update from Nixon certainly makes for good reading.

Leigh would certainly be a strong addition for MK Dons if they can get it over the line. He’s proven himself in both League Two and League One since stepping up from non-league football at Bognor Regis Town in the summer of 2021.

His ability to play as an attacking, central or defensive midfielder as well as up top would give Williamson some real versatility in the middle of the pitch. Leigh offers a goal threat from all of those roles and could really kick on at his next club.

His situation may well draw further interest, so it remains to be seen if MK can get the signing sorted.
