Eight-figure price tag set by Leeds United amid defender interest

Leeds United have set a €15m price tag as Borussia Monchengladbach target a permanent deal for Max Wober, as per BILD.

Leeds United saw a whole host of players move on following relegation from the Premier League in 2023 and among those to move on was Austrian defender Wober.

The 26-year-old performed fairly well as the Whites dropped to the Championship and he got a decent move as a result. Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach brought him in on loan for the 2023/24 campaign.

That loan is now ending though, and Wober will be back at Elland Road.

A stay seems unlikely after Leeds United missing out on an immediate Premier League return, but it seems they’re holding a firm stance over their Wober valuation as Monchengladbach eye a permanent deal.

German outlet BILD reports that the Whites are demanding €15m (around £12.6m) for Wober.

Monchengladbach are in the market for defensive recruits and want to keep their Austrian loan ace, but they’ll have to meet Leeds’ price tag.

Who is this?

A smart sale

Leeds United need to raise funds from player sales and cashing in on returning loanees seems smart.

Many will be in line for new moves this summer, with attacking midfielder Brenden Aaronson seemingly the exception with the American poised for a role in Daniel Farke’s squad when the new campaign comes around.

That seems highly unlikely for Wober though after his loan with Borussia Monchengladbach. He’s been an established top-flight player for a while now and it would be a real surprise to see him in the Championship.

It remains to be seen whether or not his recent loan club do meet the valuation though. If not, other admirers may well look to swoop in for Wober.

The summer ahead

With the aforementioned need to raise funds in mind, it seems that much of the early focus will be on departures from Leeds United this summer.

Hopefully, the Whites can settle the huge outstanding payments on transfer instalments fairly early, then allowing them to switch the full focus to recruiting for another promotion push.

Key players are bound to depart, so Farke and co will have the big task of replacing their outgoing players. The likes of Crysencio Summerville, Archie Gray, Georginio Rutter and Wilfried Gnonto are among the valuable assets who could land big fees that would put a large dent in the £190m they need to pay.

The transfer window is officially open now, so it might not be long before we start to see movement. As a player likely to be heading for the exit door, Wober’s situation can be resolved quickly if someone matches his valuation.
