Grimsby Town close to signing 25-year-old

Grimsby Town are poised to sign Derry City defender Cameron McJannet, according to a report by The Irish News.

Grimsby Town are closing in on a deal to land the centre-back as they prepare for another year in League Two. They managed to stay up in the last season under the guidance of former Crewe Alexandra boss David Artell and are in the hunt for some new signings this summer.

McJannet, 25, is out of contract later this year and is due to become available as a free agent as things stand. He has made 26 appearances in all competitions for his current club this term as they as they chase down league leaders Shelbourne in the League of Ireland.

As per The Irish News, the Mariners agreed a fee for him earlier this week. The player is due to travel over to England on Friday to discuss personal terms and conduct a medical.

Grimsby Town could see McJannet as someone to bolster their defensive department and give them more competition and depth at the back.

The Milton Keynes-born man rose up through the academy ranks at Luton Town before moving up north in 2016.

He joined Stoke City and went on to become a key player for the Potters at various different youth levels.

McJannet played 42 times for their Under-21’s and was loaned out to Curzon Ashton in non-league as a youngster to get some experience under his belt.

He never made a senior appearance for the Championship side though and left in 2020.

Derry City subsequently snapped him up and he hasn’t looked back since.

McJannet has become a key player for the Irish outfit and has played 144 games for them in all competitions, chipping in with 11 goals and four assists.

However, he appears set for a return to England now.

Grimsby Town latest

McJannet seems to fit the bill for Grimsby Town as he has played a lot of matches so far in his career and still has plenty of time on his side.

The Mariners have the chance to bring in some additions now the window is open as Artell looks to bring in some more quality.

They published their retained list in late April and confirmed that Harvey Tomlinson, Edwin Essel, Aaron Braithwaite, Jamie Bramwell, Niall Maher, Anthony Glennon, Abo Eisa, Arthur Gnahoua, Gavan Holohan, Otis Khan and Danny Amos have been released.
