Charlton Athletic have explored deal for Blackburn Rovers target at Birmingham City

Charlton Athletic have considered a move for Birmingham City goalkeeper John Ruddy this summer, as detailed in a report by London News Online.

Charlton Athletic are looking to bring in another stopper over the next couple of months despite the recent arrival of Will Mannion from Cambridge United. They are expected to cut ties with Harry Isted and Ashley Maynard-Brewer now the transfer window is open for business.

Ruddy, 37, is out of contract at Birmingham City at the end of the month and is due to become a free agent as things stand. He has been offered an extension by the Blues following their relegation to League One but has been linked with Blackburn Rovers in the Championship, as per a report by The Sun.

According to London News Online, the Addicks have ‘explored’ a potential move to lure him to The Valley. However, their chances of getting him remain up in the air amid his uncertain future at St Andrew’s.

Ruddy is a vastly experienced player in the Football League and has made over 550 appearances in his career to date.

He played 46 matches in all competitions for Birmingham City last term as they slipped out of the second tier. They finished in the bottom three along with Rotherham United and Huddersfield Town.

The St Ives-born man, who played his first and only game for England back in 2012, started his career at Cambridge United before Everton signed him as a youngster.

He played once for the Toffees’ first-team and had loan spells away at WalsallStockport CountyWrexhamBristol City and Crewe Alexandra to get some experience before heading out the Goodison Park exit door permanently in 2010 when Norwich City came calling.

Ruddy then spent seven years on the books at Carrow Road before switching to Wolves.

Birmingham City came calling in 2022 and he has been their number one since then. It is yet to be known whether he will stay put with them now though under their new manager Chris Davies.

What next?

Blackburn Rovers remain a possible next destination as Ruddy weighs up his options. His chances of regular football at Ewood Park may be slim though.

A switch to Charlton Athletic would boost his chances of getting minutes and he would compete with Mannion for the place between the sticks under Jones.
