Opinion: West Brom should be among Newcastle United man’s admirers after double departure

West Brom are in the market for new recruits this summer and there are some good deals to be had by Carlos Corberan and co.

West Brom will be hoping for a fruitful summer transfer window with new owner Shilen Patel at the helm.

After operating on tight pursestrings in previous windows, the change at the top of the club will hopefully allow the Baggies to flex their financial muscles a bit more than they have been.

However, shrewd signings will not be frowned upon, and there is smart business to be done this summer.

It seems inevitable that Carlos Corberan looks to bolster his midfield, and the situation of Isaac Hayden at Newcastle United is one that should pique interests at West Brom this summer.

A gap to plug

West Brom will be bidding farewell to at least two midfielders this summer. In the announcement of their retained list, they confirmed that Nathaniel Chalobah and Yann M’Vila will both be departing upon the expiry of their contracts.

Alex Mowatt also sees his deal expire and a decision is yet to be confirmed with an offer on the table.

Chalobah and M’Vila’s exits will mean a defensive midfielder is needed, and that need will only increase if Mowatt moves on too. Newcastle United fringe man Hayden can plug that gap as an exit beckons for him.

He spent the second half of the season in the Championship with QPR and as he prepares to return to St. James’ Park, the Magpies are looking to negotiate the early end of his contract to allow Hayden to find a new home as a free agent.

He’s keen on a return to Loftus Road, but other second-tier sides are keen, and West Brom would be wise to be among them.

Shrewd signing for the Baggies?

Hayden might not be the midfielder that played a key role in Newcastle United’s Championship title win in the 2016/17 season, but his stint at QPR showed he can still be a valuable asset this level.

He offers hard work in the middle of the park and he’s at his best shielding the backline, so there’s definitely a place for him in Corberan’s West Brom midfield.

The 29-year-old has great experience in both the Championship and Premier League, so he could be an influential player in the dressing room and around the training ground for Corberan.

There are bound to be strong admirers if a free transfer move away from Newcastle United becomes a possibility but with a gap forming in West Brom’s midfield department, Hayden’s situation is one that the Baggies should be keeping an eye on.
