QPR dealt blow as 10-goal target signs new long-term contract

QPR target Thibaud Verlinden has signed a new three-year deal with Beerschot, as announced by their official club website.

QPR’s hopes of luring the winger back to England this summer have taken a blow. He has now committed his future to his current club until June 2027 amid reported attention from elsewhere.

Verlinden, 24, is said to be wanted by the Hoops along with Schalke and Royle Union Saint-Gilloise according to a report by GVA after he scored 10 goals in all competitions last season. Nieuwsblad claim Nürnberg have also been interested in snapping him up.

However, in this latest update, he has put pen-to-paper on an extension with Beerschot for three more campaigns in a big boost to them. His suitors may have to start looking elsewhere for attacking reinforcements ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

The R’s are eyeing additions as they gear up for Marti Cifuentes’ first full campaign at the helm.

Who is this?

A saving grace for QPR is the fact that they have plenty of time to find alternative options to Verlinden.

He would have been a useful addition for them and would have added more competition and depth to their attacking department. However, there are plenty more fish in the sea.

His previous deal at Beerschot was due to expire in 2025 meaning they probably would have had to sell him over the next couple of months or in January to avoid losing him for free next year. However, they don’t need to worry about that anymore and appear to have now fended off external interest.

The ex-Belgium youth international joined them back in 2022 and has since become one of their most prized assets.

He started out in the academies at Club Brugge and Standard Liege before joining Stoke City as a youngster.

Verlinden played 13 times for the Potters and was loaned out to FC. St Pauli and Bolton Wanderers to get some experience under his belt.

He left the bet365 Stadium permanently and had spells at Fortuna Sittard and FC DAC 1904 Dunajská Streda before moving back to his native country.

What next for QPR?

QPR can cross this name off their list of targets and start scouring the market for other candidates.

The Hoops are carrying some momentum into next term after they managed to stay up under Cifuentes.

That could take them a long way but they need to ensure that they get their recruitment right and bring in the right type of characters.
