Leeds United eyeing permanent swoop for 28-year-old Burnley man

Leeds United are eyeing a permanent deal for Burnley defender Connor Roberts, as per The Athletic.

Leeds United are gearing up for another promotion push this season.

Daniel Farke’s side missed out on promotion narrowly last time out. The Whites finished just a handful of points behind the champions, Leicester City, but went onto lose in the play-off final against Southampton.

The German boss is more than capable of guiding a team to the top flight, but this season he will be hoping to do so in the top two and avoid the lottery of play-offs.

Roberts, 28, spent part of last season on loan at Elland Road. He made 14 Premier League appearances for the Clarets before moving to Yorkshire where he played 15 games for Farke’s side.

He wasn’t the first choice right back for large parts of his time at the Whites, but it is believed he could play a bigger role should he move back there this summer.

The Athletic claim Leeds United are eyeing a permanent swoop for Roberts, but his future depends heavily on who takes charge of Burnley following Vincent Kompany’s departure.

Who is this?

Looking ahead

Both Burnley and Leeds United will be hoping to go up this year. Burnley suffered relegation last time around and failed to adapt to the demands of the Premier League, but just like they did two seasons ago, it is expected that their squad will be one of the strongest in the second tier.

Leeds United have a busy summer ahead. There is a chance they will lose some big names, but the Whites have seemingly already started identifying who they want to come in and strengthen their ranks.

Roberts could well depart Turf Moor permanently this summer, but he will surely want reassurances over game time wherever he ends up.

An opportunity to pounce

It could be argued the Championship this season doesn’t look as strong as it did last year.

Burnley, Luton Town and Sheffield United make up the three relegated teams and whilst all three should be good sides, they don’t appear as dangerous as Southampton, Leeds United and Leicester City did this time 12 months ago.

The Whites were inconsistent at times last season and it did really cost them. However, should they hit the ground running this time around then there may be no catching them this year.

It will be interesting to see how both clubs handle their summer business and whether they can find an agreement for the Roberts deal in the next couple of months.
