Opinion: Corberan should reunite with 25-year-old star at West Brom, he’ll cost under £1m

West Brom boss Carlos Corberan will be determined to bolster his ranks this summer as they leave play-off heartbreak in the past.

West Brom fell short of promotion as they were beaten by eventual play-off winners Southampton in their semi-final. Despite the disappointing end though, the 2023/24 season was a positive one as Corberan and co held down 5th place for just about the entire campaign.

Looking to next season, the Baggies will be determined to find success in a new fight for promotion.

With new owner Shilen Patel at the helm, the hope will be that Corberan can be backed with some new signings this summer. Even though some key men may move on, some strong recruitment should have the club in the promotion scrap once more.

As there is with every transfer window, there will be shrewd deals to do, it’s just a case of finding them. Now, ahead of the window opening on Friday, one man who should be on the West Brom radar is Sorba Thomas.

A former Corberan star

Corberan and Thomas are very much familiar with one another from their time together at Huddersfield Town. In fact, some of the best football the 25-year-old has played was under the Spaniard.

On the right-hand side, Thomas notched three goals and 16 assists in the 58 games managed by Corberan (Transfermarkt). He’s maintained a key role for Huddersfield Town since the manager’s exit too, tallying four goals and nine assists in the 2023/24 season.

Of course though, Thomas’ best efforts weren’t enough to stave off relegation. The Terriers are heading for League One and the Welshman is among those who should be heading back to the Championship.

A £750,000 price tag has reportedly been set, and that must pique interests at West Brom.

Logical business

At that price, it will not be a surprise if Thomas has a whole host of Championship admirers. He’s proven himself as a real creative standout at the level, notching 29 assists in 131 games.

Corberan knows exactly what he would be getting from the winger and vice versa. A move to West Brom would give Thomas a deserved shot with a more upwardly mobile club, which could help him find a new level.

Who is this?

Thomas is still only 25 so he has plenty of time to develop and improve. Given that he’s already impressed in the second-tier, that should make his £750,000 price tag stand out as one of the bargains of the summer.

The Baggies will hopefully have the funds to spend on bigger deals but at a fee that low, Thomas must be on Corberan’s shortlist of potential additions as he looks to lead West Brom back to the Premier League.
