Stoke City eyeing move for Championship winger on free transfer

Stoke City are considering a move for Plymouth Argyle forward Mickel Miller after contract talks stalled with the Pilgrims, as per TEAMtalk.

Stoke City are hoping to strengthen their squad ahead of the new Championship campaign.

The Potters had a poor season last time around, finishing 17th in the second tier.

Steven Schumacher is in his first summer at the helm of the Potters though and he will be hoping the time over pre-season is enough for him to make his mark on Stoke City’s side.

Miller, 28, played 34 Championship games for Plymouth Argyle last season, scoring once and assisting another.

Schumacher worked with Miller whilst at Home Park and he is evidently someone he trusts to add something to the Potters’ squad, but he is yet to prove himself in the Championship with his best season coming in League One whilst at Rotherham United.

Portsmouth and Preston North End were reportedly interested in the attacker, but it is now Stoke City who are eyeing a deal with Miller’s contract set to expire at the end of the month.

Who is this?

A long road ahead

Stoke City have struggled in the Championship since dropping down into the second tier in 2018. Schumacher has only been at the club for 25 games and he will need time over the next season to really put his methods in place.

The Potters are crying out for improvement though and they cannot afford to have another campaign like last one.

Miller would add experience and on a free transfer it may be a smart move, however there will be question marks over his Championship appearances so far in his career.

One step at a time

Stoke City can’t expect to immediately start pushing for the top six, and it’s likely they won’t.

However, they can expect to not be dragged into a relegation battle this time around. Schumacher’s side were only five points above the drop zone come the end of last season and that included a run of five games unbeaten to end the campaign. Things could have been very different.

But, those final five games shows the quality they do have and if they make the right moves this summer then they could easily be in a stable position next season before looking to push on again the following year.
