Rangers plan bid for Bristol City attacker later this summer

Bristol City man Tommy Conway could be subject to a bid from Rangers later this summer, as per The Daily Record, print edition.

Bristol City finished 11th last season in the Championship.

The Robins are about to embark on their first full campaign with Liam Manning at the helm after he was appointed in November last year.

11 points separated Bristol City and the top six last season and one of their best performers was 21-year-old Conway.

He scored ten goals and assisted another in 39 Championship outings last time around. The season before he contributed to 12 goals in 34 league games, but now as he enters the final 12 months of his contract he is expected to depart.

Initial reports earlier this week claimed Rangers, Celtic, Wolves and Leicester City were monitoring the situation. However, a fresh update now claims Rangers will make an offer if he runs down the final 12 months of his deal.

But, it has been said that the Gers will face competition from Celtic and whilst compensation could go as little as £300,000 from January onwards, a strong EUROs for the attacker would allow Bristol City to demand a seven-figure fee this summer.

Who is this?

Losing out

Manning will be losing a big player should Conway depart this summer. The striker has been a strong asset for their side for a couple of seasons now, but it seems inevitable that he departs.

The main talking point now is how much can the Championship club bring in for the sale.

In an ideal world, Conway would have a great time with Scotland in Germany this summer and that would allow the Robins to ask for a little extra this summer, but it does seem more likely that he is sold at a cut price due to the time left on his current contract.

The worst case scenario is no club wanting to make a permanent move this summer and instead opting to wait until after January when Conway can sign a pre-contract elsewhere.

Moving on

Bristol City have lost big names in the past and the club do seem quite good at maintaining the level of quality in their squad through their academy and recruitment.

The Robins have really failed to challenge the top six of the Championship for quite a while now, instead spending most of their seasons mid-table.

It will be hoped Manning will be able to turn that tide and have his side competing for a spot in the play-offs but whether next season is too early for that remains to be seen.
