Peterborough United defender Josh Knight has ‘sealed’ his move to Hannover 96, as per reporter Pete O’Rourke.

Peterborough United are poised to bid farewell to some influential players this summer.

Departures from London Road were inevitable but having fallen short of promotion, key men are set to depart. Posh were beaten in the play-off semi-finals by Oxford United, who went on to win the Wembley final to join Portsmouth and Derby County in the Championship.

Among those who have been heavily linked with an exit is defender Josh Knight. German side Hannover 96 have been on his trail, but Posh made an improved contract offer to try and keep him.

Now though, writing on X, reporter Pete O’Rourke says Knight’s decision has been made.

He states the Peterborough United star has ‘sealed’ his free transfer move to Hannover, with a medical already completed too. As a result, his London Road stay looks set to end after three years.

Knight managed six goals and four assists from defence in 57 games in the 2023/24 season. Over the course of a permanent spell and two loans, the 26-year-old played 169 times for Posh, chipping in with 11 goals and nine assists along the way.

Who is this?

An eye-catching switch

It’s no secret that Peterborough United want to keep Knight, and you can’t blame them.

After offering an improved contract though, it looks as though the former Leicester City man has made up his mind, and he’ll now embark on a new chapter as he heads to play outside of England for the first time.

It’s no secret why a move to Hannover is an attractive prospect for Knight either.

The German club currently play in 2. Bundesliga, the country’s second-tier, but they’ve been top-flight mainstays in previous years and ultimately hold goals of getting back there. With a 49,000-seater stadium on offer too, it’ll be quite the stage for Knight to take his next step.

A new centre-back partnership?

Failure to win promotion means key players will depart and it will be widely expected that Knight’s centre-back partner Ronnie Edwards also makes an eye-catching move to a higher level.

That will leave Darren Ferguson in need of a brand new centre-back partnership.

Romoney Crichlow and Charlie O’Connell are both available for transfer, leaving just Emmanuel Fernandez at the heart of defence, and while he might get a shot in pre-season, there will be reservations over whether or not he is ready to be a starter for a promotion-chasing side.

It means Peterborough United are in for a busy window, with centre-backs sure to be a point of focus.
