Comment: Available Charlton Athletic man should be on Notts County’s transfer radar

Notts County could do with finding a new goalkeeper this summer, and Charlton Athletic man Ashley Maynard-Brewer could be a great option.

Notts County will be playing League Two football again next season and Stuart Maynard will be determined to shuffle the ranks in his first summer transfer window at the club.

The hope will be that the Magpies can do plenty of business across the squad, but it seems inevitable that one area that will be added to is in goal.

Luca Ashby-Hammond’s loan has come to an end and Aidan Stone is available for transfer, leaving only veteran Sam Slocombe and youngster Tiernan Brooks on the books as options in between the sticks. As a result, at least one ‘keeper will be on the radar.

In their hunt for a new no. 1, one man Notts County should turn to is Charlton Athletic shot-stopper Ashley Maynard-Brewer.

Heading for pastures new

The Addicks look set for a goalkeeping revamp of their own this summer.

Will Mannion has already joined Charlton Athletic from Cambridge United with Lewis Ward’s deal ending and duo Maynard-Brewer and Harry Isted surplus to requirements. The pair are attracting interest and should have some good options in the Football League.

Maynard-Brewer emerged from the club’s academy and after a number of loan spells, he found a place in the first-team in South London. The 2023/24 campaign wasn’t his best but he’s shown what he’s capable of at the top of his game over the course of 62 appearances for Charlton.

League Two looks to be a good level for the 24-year-old Australian at the time being, and Notts County can consider him as a solid option if their search for another goalkeeper.

For the present and future

At 24, Maynard-Brewer has plenty of time to maximise his potential and hold down the starting spot at Notts County for years to come. Importantly though, he’s good enough to come in and have an immediate impact at Meadow Lane.

His experience in League One should have him well prepared for League Two football as he looks to kick on away from Charlton Athletic.

Who is this?

Maynard-Brewer could be the much-needed answer to the Magpies’ goalkeeping situation and given his standing in the pecking order under Jones, it shouldn’t take too much to get a deal done.

He’ll likely have some good options elsewhere though, so Notts County would be wise to move sooner rather than later if Maynard-Brewer is someone that interests them.
