‘We definitely want him’ – Wrexham in active pursuit of 22-year-old, Rob McElhenney confirms

Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney has confirmed the club are ‘actively’ talking with Arthur Okonkwo over a deal to bring him back to North Wales.

Wrexham are heading for League One and the club have been heavily linked with a return move for goalkeeper Okonkwo this summer.

The 22-year-old spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan at the Racecourse Ground and played a key role in their promotion from League Two. He kept 16 clean sheets in 40 outings after signing, becoming influential as Phil Parkinson tightened up his defence.

Speculation over his future has been rife and a departure from parent club Arsenal means Okonkwo can move on a free transfer this summer.

Now, their pursuit has been confirmed by co-owner Rob McElhenney.

As quoted by talkSPORT, the Wrexham chief confirmed active talks with the goalkeeper are taking place with both parties keen to get a deal done. When asked about the chances of an Okonkwo return, he said:

“There’s a very good chance.

“We’re talking to Arthur actively right now, we know he wants to come back to Wrexham and we definitely want him.

Who is this?

A deal on the cards?

Wrexham’s chase for Okonkwo has been well-documented and with McElhenney now confirming the current state of play, it will be hoped an agreement isn’t too far away.

The deal is certainly a doable one. There’s no other club to deal with, it’s simply talks between the Red Dragons and the player, and both are keen to strike an agreement ahead of next season.

It seems like a logical deal for Parkinson and co too. Not only is Okonkwo is a popular loan star, but he’s a promising asset for the years to come and will be hoping to grow as the club bid to progress up the leagues.

As a free agent, it’s a bit of a no-brainer to try and bring Okonkwo back, but it remains to be seen if they can reach an agreement with other clubs sure to target him if he isn’t heading back to Wales.

An intriguing summer ahead

Wrexham have had financial powers far beyond that of their league rivals in both the National League and League Two, but with the stature of some League One clubs, there will be some strong competition this season.

They’ve been able to punch above their weigh and recruit from higher leagues in previous windows, so it will be interesting to see if that is still the case after making yet another rise in division.

A move for Okonkwo would be the perfect start to summer business but co-owners McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds will not be looking to stop there.

After back-to-back promotions, the Red Dragons will want to fight it out towards the top end of League One. While they boast a strong squad though, further recruits will be needed if they’re to reach those heights once again.
