Stevenage win race for MK Dons man also wanted by Stockport County

Stevenage have won the race to sign MK Dons man Dan Kemp on a free transfer later this month, as per Alan Nixon.

Stevenage finished 9th in League One last season. At one stage under Steve Evans it looked as if a top six finish was on the cards, but they tailed off and finished inside the top half instead.

Evans has now left the club and Alex Revell is the man tasked with continuing the positive run the club have been on over recent times.

Kemp, 25, spent last season at MK Dons and on a brief loan spell at Swindon Town. He played in 48 games across the 2023/24 campaign and scored 19 goals and got ten assists in all competitions.

The versatile midfielder can play centrally or out wide and he has proven himself in League Two over the past two seasons.

He is set to become a free agent this month and Stevenage and Stockport County were eyeing up a move for the midfielder.

Now, Nixon has claimed it is Stevenage who have won the race, pipping David Challinor’s side to the signature of Kemp.

Who is this?

A sign of ambition

Stevenage will be wanting to maintain the form they demonstrated for large parts of last season, but the third tier is unforgiving and there is no time to rest over the summer for any club wanting to achieve success.

Kemp is a real sign of ambition. The 25-year-old is a very good addition and whilst unproven in League One, his performances over the past two campaigns suggest he should have no issue adapting to the higher level.

Stockport County, recently promoted into League One, were on of a few clubs eyeing up Kemp and it can be seen as a very positive sign for Stevenage fans that they have managed to tempt their target to their club this summer.

A tough road ahead

Evans will be a tough man to replace for Stevenage. He will be managing Rotherham United who were relegated into League One last season.

His side will be expected to challenge for an immediate return to the Championship, whilst Stevenage will be hoping Revell hits the ground running.

The 40-year-old boss had a spell in charge of Stevenage back in 2020 when the club were almost relegated into the National League, but now the behind the scenes at the club are in a much healthier condition, it may allow Revell to finally thrive at the helm.
