Ipswich Town have been credited with an interest in the 25-year-old ahead of the upcoming transfer market along with Sheffield United and Middlesbrough, according to reporter Alan Nixon on his Patreon page. He spent time on loan with the latter in the Championship last season.

O’Brien is now due to return to Nottingham Forest for pre-season but his long-term future with the Premier League side is up in the air at this moment in time. His contract at The City Ground expires in June 2026 but he is down the pecking order.

In this latest update regarding his situation, TWTD claim the Tractor Boys aren’t pursuing a deal for him as they prepare for life in the Premier League. They came 2nd in the table behind Leicester City.

O’Brien rose up through the academy ranks at Huddersfield Town and had a loan spell away from the John Smith’s Stadium at Bradford City to get some experience before breaking into the Terriers’ first-team.

He helped the Yorkshire club get to the play-off final during his time there under Carlos Corberan before Nottingham Forest snapped him up.

However, the Colchester-born man has struggled to make an impact with his current club.

He was shipped out on loan to America to join DC United in MLS before linking up with Middlsbrough on a temporary basis last year.

O’Brien went on to make 25 appearances for Michael Carrick’s side in all competitions, 23 of which came in the league.

Ipswich Town plans

Ipswich Town will need to get their recruitment right over the next couple of months as they gear up for the top flight.

They have been boosted by the fact Kieran McKenna has committed his future to the club and they will now be eager to inject some more quality into their ranks. Dominic Ball, Panutche Camara, Nick Hayes, Kayden Jackson have all left recently as free agents, whilst attacker Sone Aluko has retired from the game.

O’Brien would be a good signing for a team in the second tier but he probably wouldn’t get into the Tractor Boys’ starting XI.

The fact that Ipswich Town aren’t pushing to sign him, according to TWTD, could now open the door for Middlesbrough and Sheffield United to swoop in.
