Ipswich Town, Middlesbrough and Sheffield United to battle it out for PL midfielder

Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough are interested in signing Nottingham Forest man Lewis O’Brien this summer, as per Alan Nixon.

Ipswich Town are preparing for life in the Premeir League following their promotion last season.

Middlesbrough and Sheffield United are gearing up for another year in the Championship with the former finishing 8th and the latter suffering relegation.

All three clubs are aiming for different things at the moment, but they all have their eyes on one man to help bolster their ranks this summer.

O’Brien, 25, spent the season on loan at Boro last time around. He made 23 Championship appearances for Michael Carrick’s side and assisted one goal in the second tier.

He joined Nottingham Forest following a good campaign with Huddersfield Town in the 2021/22 season, but he failed to make a mark at The City Ground and was soon sent to America for a spell in the MLS.

Now, it seems he is set to leave Forest for good. Nixon reports Boro are keen on a reunion, whilst the Blades are also keeping tabs on the midfielder. However, their takeover situation is stopping them from making any moves at the moment.

The report goes onto claim Kieran McKenna’s side have the upper-hand. O’Brien would rather stay in the Premier League and Forest would solve some of their own financial worries by selling O’Brien early this summer. His value is reportedly under £10million.

Who is this?

A three-way race

It isn’t fully clear how much Forest would want for their man this summer, or how much McKenna’s side would be willing to part with.

That could leave the door open for Boro or Sheffield United later in the window should Ipswich Town fail to strike a deal.

O’Brien is yet to really prove himself at Premier League level, but given a run of consistent games he could well be a very handy player to have in the ranks at Portman Road next season.

A lot of work to do

The Championship, as ever, is hard to predict ahead of next season. Both Middlesbrough and Sheffield United will have aspirations of a top six finish and Carrick’s recent contract extension shows they have faith the former Manchester United man is the right person to do that for them.

Meanwhile, Ipswich Town will be hoping they can survive in the Premier League and begin to establish themselves back in the top flight after a long absence.

It was proven last season that is not an easy thing to do. However, Ipswich Town have spent the past two years proving people wrong and at the moment it’s hard to go against what McKenna is building.
