Sunderland face competition as new club consider Jansen for manager

Sunderland may need to move fast to appoint Pascal Jansen as Panathinaikos are eyeing him up if they fail to appoint Maurizio Sarri, as per Sportime.

Sunderland fans are still waiting to see who Michael Beale’s permanent replacement will be 108 days after his sacking.

The Black Cats appear to be struggling to decide and/or appoint Beale’s successor with the search appearing no further forward despite the amount of time that has passed.

The patience of the fanbase is being tested this summer and it seems the Sunderland hierarchy have a lot of work to do over the next couple of months to win back lost trust.

Several names have been linked with the job so far this summer. However, the latest is former AZ Alkmaar boss Jansen. He spent over three years in the Netherlands with AZ and recorded some impressive finished in the Eredivisie.

However, a new report claims Greek side Panathinaikos may turn to Jansen if they fail to tempt Sarri into the job.

Who is this?

A tempting prospect

Panathinaikos finished 3rd in Greece’s top tier last season and are therefore in the qualification stages of the Europa League.

The possibility of European football would be hard for Sunderland to compete with and it is therefore vital that they move fast if Jansen is indeed one of their preferred options this summer.

The London-born boss has built a solid reputation in the Netherlands and he would be a pretty impressive coup for a Championship club given his track record.

But, there is yet to be anything that suggests Sunderland’s interest is advanced and this may well just be another name linked with the job that doesn’t materialise this summer.

Work to do

Sunderland must improve on last season. They started well but soon fell away and were left closer to the relegation zone than the top six come May.

The Black Cats are still new to the Championship with this coming campaign their third back in the second tier. However, fans won’t accept another year of the same and it is imperative the right decisions are made this summer.

It seems inevitable that Sunderland will soon make a breakthrough regarding a new appointment, but as the days pass the faith among the fanbase is dwindling.

This situation is certainly one to keep an eye on as yet another of Sunderland’s targets appear to be on the brink of moving elsewhere.
