MK Dons tipped to sign Chesterfield man on free transfer

MK Dons are being tipped to sign Laurence Maguire upon the expiration of his contract at Chesterfield later this month, as per Pete O’Rourke.

Maguire, 27, played 39 games for Crawley Town last season in all competitions. The central defender scored three league goals as his side won the League Two play-offs.

Prior to joining on loan Crawley Town he spent several seasons at Chesterfield who have just achieved promotion back to the Football League.

He featured sporadically in League One and Two with Chesterfield and became a regular for them when they dropped into the fifth tier of English football.

Maguire will have been at Chesterfield for nine years at the end of the month, but he is set to leave on a free transfer.

O’Rourke claims his next move is all but certain now as Maguire is poised for a Football League return with MK Dons ready to swoop.

A solid addition

Maguire has plenty experience and still has a good few years ahead of him.

The 27-year-old had a solid year on loan in the fourth tier last season and he proved he can still compete at that level on a regular basis.

He would’ve been a handy player for Chesterfield to hold onto as they try and make the jump stick from non-league to Football League. However, it seems instead it will be another League Two team who will benefit from not only his experience, but his ability.

Bridging the gap

MK Dons finished 4th last season in League Two. They lost heavily across the two legged play-off semi final against Crawley Town and this season will no doubt be looking to achieve another top seven finish.

Adding Maguire to their ranks is a good step in the right direction, and if used well he will provide a solid foundation at the base of the team, whilst also providing a goal threat from set pieces which is something that is usually crucial for teams hoping to go up.

Only time will tell, but on the face of it there is no reason why Maguire won’t be a good fit for MK Dons. His loan move last season will have set him up well and he should be ready to hit the ground running if this deal gets over the line this summer.

Chesterfield will have to turn their attention elsewhere as they try and strengthen their squad to survive and stabilise once again at this level, but the club have good foundations and there is no reason why they can’t survive this coming season.
