Uncertainty surrounds future of popular Sheffield Wednesday man amid interest from elsewhere

Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Will Vaulks is no closer to agreeing a new contract with the club, The Star has reported.

Sheffield Wednesday are in for a busy summer transfer window as they gear up for next season and a number of players will be making way this summer.

Exits will pave the way for new signings to come through the door, but one man the Owls and Danny Rohl are keen to hold onto is influential midfielder Will Vaulks.

It was confirmed in the club’s retained list that the Wales international had been offered new terms but an agreement has not been reached. With less than a month now remaining on his contract, concerns that he’ll be departing are increasing.

Now, The Star states that Vaulks and Sheffield Wednesday are not currently close to a deal either.

They add he is ‘eager’ to stay, but interest from elsewhere has arisen in case he does move on from Hillsborough at the end of this month.

Who is this?

A key man to hold onto

Vaulks minutes weren’t great in the early part of the season but under Rohl, he would start regularly once again. His influence was key as Sheffield Wednesday climbed out the relegation zone.

The 30-year-old featured 37 times across all competitions, notching three assists in the process. He’s now played 91 times for the Owls since signing in July 2022 and many hope he can add to that tally.

The experience and leadership Vaulks offers in the middle of the park is key, so it’s no wonder his situation is drawing admiring glances from elsewhere.

As more time passes, fears that the popular midfielder is to depart will only grow.

A midfield rebuild awaits?

There will be changes to the midfield options at Sheffield Wednesday this summer, and a departure for Vaulks will likely add another target to the shortlist.

Tyreeq Bakinson and George Byers are being released while loan players return to their parent clubs.

Rohl is currently left with just Barry Bannan contracted to the Owls beyond the end of this month. There are versatile players like Liam Palmer who can play in midfield, but if Vaulks is added to the list of departures, a real rebuild of the midfielder department awaits.

The hope will be that ground can be made up in negotiations but this update isn’t the most encouraging regarding Vaulks’ future.
