Wrexham, Plymouth Argyle land transfer boost as Championship club fail to agree midfielder deal

Wrexham and Plymouth Argyle target Marc Leonard is unlikely to join Preston North End after he failed to agree wages with the club, as per the Lancashire Post.

Wrexham are among the numerous sides to have been linked with Brighton midfielder Leonard.

Off the back of another impressive loan stint at Northampton Town, it has been said that Plymouth Argyle, Hull City and Preston North End have all been on the trail of the 22-year-old Scotsman.

However, it looks as though one club will not be bringing Leonard in this summer.

A report from the Lancashire Post states that Preston had been in talks over a deal to bring in the promising Brighton man. The relevant parties could not come to an agreement over wages though, and it seems unlikely that a deal can be revived.

That paves the way for fellow admirers Wrexham, Plymouth Argyle and more to jump in as Leonard prepares to move on from the AMEX Stadium permanently ahead of next season.

Who is this?

Out of the chase

News of Preston’s collapsed talks over personal terms with Leonard will certainly pique interests among his admirers.

It may well prompt the likes of Wrexham, Plymouth Argyle, Hull City and any other admirers to make a move of their own with Leonard more than likely on the move this summer.

His immediate future looks to lay away from Brighton following two successful loans and having found success with Northampton Town, the rumoured fee of £300,000 could end up being a bit of a snip.

He looks ready to kick on and a permanent move will help him do that, it just remains to be seen where he takes his next steps after talks with Preston ended in failure.

The Championship awaits?

Wrexham have shown that if anyone can tempt a higher level of player to a lower league, it’s them.

They’ve got the finances to punch above their weight and the high profile project ongoing in North Wales could be enough to tempt Leonard in despite the fact he looks ready for a step up.

Perhaps a desire to play at a higher level offers Championship admirers a better chance of striking a deal though. Leonard will be determined to work his way back to the Premier League as a Brighton exit awaits and joining a second-tier club will have him close to doing that.

It should give his second-tier suitors a good shot at striking a deal and with Preston out of the reckoning, there might be no time like the present to make a move for his services.
