Derby County are not actively targeting Barnsley’s departing midfielder Herbie Kane, Derbyshire Live has said.

Derby County are heading for the Championship and Paul Warne will be freshening up his ranks.

One area the Rams are sure to add to is midfield and a number of players have already been linked with moves to Pride Park. Among those recently mentioned as a target is former Liverpool man Herbie Kane.

Barnsley have confirmed the 25-year-old will be moving on from Oakwell when his deal expires, freeing him to find a new home as a free agent ahead of next season.

However, links between Kane and Derby County have now been played down.

Derbyshire Live writes that the free agent to-be is not currently an ‘active target’ for the Rams.

It comes after Kane played 47 times over the 2023/24 season, helping Barnsley make it to the play-off semi-finals. He managed 10 goals and five assists along the way, mainly operating as an attacking midfielder while also playing deeper when called upon.

Warne’s current options

The midfield department at Pride Park is sure to be revamped ahead of next season.

While loan star Ebou Adams is wanted back permanently, both Conor Hourihane and Korey Smith will be moving on from Derby County. Max Bird will link up with Bristol City after the January deal between the Rams and the Robins.

It leaves just Liam Thompson, Darren Robinson and Tyrese Fornah as the only options on the books contracted to the club for next season. Louie Sibley – who is a natural in the middle but has been moved to wing-back – sees his contract expire soon with a decision yet to be made.

It means as many as three midfielders could be targeted, though Kane may not be among them.

Where next for Kane?

While Derby County might not be on his trail, Kane shouldn’t be short of options this summer.

He’s a proven performer in League One, offering attack threat from midfield. He has tasted Championship football before but may well have his eyes on a step up following another strong showing in the third-tier.

Sides perhaps in the bottom half of the second-tier could see him as a shrewd addition to the ranks on a free transfer. At 25, he’s at a great age to start a new challenge and kick on.

Time will tell what awaits Kane as he moves on from Oakwell but it would not be a surprise to see him lining up for a Championship side come the start of next season.
