Opinion: 27-year-old’s situation with L1 rivals should put Charlton Athletic on alert

Charlton Athletic are going to be in for a busy summer transfer window as Nathan Jones shapes the squad to his liking.

Charlton Athletic saw Jones take charge shortly after the January transfer window ended and while he took the chance to make some free transfer signings, this summer presents his first real opportunity to make notable changes to the squad.

New faces will be coming in while a number of players depart. There are some key names among those exiting too, with centre-back an area that will need bolstering.

Terell Thomas and Michael Hector are both moving on from The Valley, both of whom had been regulars.

It opens the door for a couple of centre-back additions this summer and Jones will already have options in mind. However, if he’s not already on the radar, Zak Jules is someone Charlton Athletic should be keeping a keen eye on.

Heading for the exit door

League One rivals Exeter City are set to see defender Jules depart this summer, fresh reports have said.

Writing on X, reporter Pete O’Rourke said that the 27-year-old will not be taking up his option to extend his Grecians deal by a year and as a result, he’ll be free to find a new club as a free agent.

Championship and League One clubs are claimed to have taken an interest in his situation and Charlton Athletic should be among those eagerly awaiting confirmation of his summer transfer fate.

Jules was a reliable performer for Exeter, operating as a left-sided centre-back, left-back or wing-back for Gary Caldwell’s side. That level of versatility he offers could be of great value to Jones, who also played in a 3-5-2 setup more often than not.

Scotsman Jules would be a good fit for that, offering himself as an option in a range of positions in Jones’ setup. His experience in League One and League Two means he wouldn’t need time to settle into the level either, perhaps making him a better option than possible targets outside the EFL.

Who is this?

Competition for his signature

As a versatile and athletic defender, it’s perhaps not surprising that Jules is drawing his fair share of interest.

Charlton Athletic might fancy their chances of fending off League One admirers in a battle for his signature but if Championship sides are keen, that could make things trickier for the Addicks and Jules’ third-tier fans.

Charlton is going to be an exciting club to be at though. With a great boss at the helm and aims of working their way back into the second-tier at a club revitalised by their management change, someone like Jules could really benefit from a move to South London.

It remains to be seen just who is on his tail, but the Addicks should be among them as they look to bolster their backline.
