Leicester City’s five record sales from 2010 to 2020 – where are they now?

Leicester City spent a fairly even split between the Premier League and Championship during the past decade, though their sales ramped up in the top flight.

Leicester City split their time between the Premier League and Championship during the 10 years from 2010 to 2020, though their sales ramped up in the top-flight.

Leicester City secured an instant return to the Premier League this season, clinching the title with an impressive 97 points despite a late wobble.

The Foxes were led to success by Enzo Maresca, but a summer of change is around the corner as he moves on while financial wrangles continue at the King Power Stadium.

Before we look ahead, however, it is time to reminisce. Here, we look at the five biggest Leicester City sales from 2010 to 2020 and where the players are now…

N’Golo Kante

First up, a world-cup winner whose £30m price tag turned out to be a bargain as Kante left Leicester City to join Chelsea in 2016.

The French midfielder made the switch to Stamford Bridge having just won the Premier League with the Foxes, then won the league again in his first season with the Blues.

During seven years with Chelsea, he also lifted the Champions League, the FA Cup, the Europa League, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup throughout 269 appearances. The trophies continued on the international stage too, winning the World Cup and Nations League with France in 2018 and 2021 respectively.

He left England with multiple personal accolades on top of his club successes, joining Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ittihad last summer. He has been a standout player there too, now aged 33.

Danny Drinkwater

Second on our list, and another player poached by Chelsea, Drinkwater left the Foxes for £35m in 2017.

The three-time England international spent five years with the Blues, though managed just 23 appearances in a tough spell after becoming a household name at Leicester City.

He first joined Burnley on loan in 2019, though featured just twice, before a loan move to Aston Villa the following year where he struggled for minutes again prior to his loan end.

Drinkwater then endured spells at Kasimpasa and Reading, where he found regular football again. The 34-year-old has now been retired for two years.

Ben Chilwell

Yet another player who made the switch from Leicester City to Chelsea is Ben Chilwell, who cost the Blues £50m in 2020.

The left-back has featured 106 times for Chelsea, though has faced multiple injury setbacks during his time at Stamford Bridge. Despite this, he has lifted the Champions League and UEFA Super Cup so far.

Capped 21 times by England, the former Fox recently missed out on Gareth Southgate’s provisional squad for EURO 2024.

Now 27, Chilwell has three years left on his deal with the Blues as his contract was extended last year.

Who is this?

Riyad Mahrez

Next up is Algeria international Mahrez who left Leicester City for Manchester City for £60m in 2018 having remained with the Foxes for two seasons following their Premier League title triumph.

As with the nature of playing for the Citizens, the winger enjoyed a majorly successful five years with the club during which he won the league on four occasions alongside lifting the FA Cup twice, the EFL Cup three times, the FA Community Shield and the Champions League.

Mahrez also tasted success on the national stage by lifting the Africa Cup of Nations in 2019, and ended his stay at the Etihad Stadium last year with 78 goals and 56 assists in 236 appearances.

The 33-year-old joined Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ahli at the start of the campaign and enjoyed a successful first season having registered 12 goals and 14 assists in 33 appearances.

Harry Maguire

The most expensive Leicester City sale from 2010 to 2020 was centre-back Maguire. He became the world’s most expensive defender in 2019 as he joined Manchester United for a whopping £80m fee.

Establishing himself as a regular England international during his time with the Red Devils, he has featured 206 times at club level and lifted both the EFL Cup and FA Cup.

Maguire also has seven goals in 63 appearances for the Three Lions, making him the highest scoring defender for the England national side.

The 31-year-old has one year left on his deal at Old Trafford and overcame a tough period of criticism to ensure a steady campaign this season.
