Wycombe Wanderers hoping to beat Charlton Athletic to sign free agent after Sheffield Wednesday exit

Wycombe Wanderers are in ‘advanced talks’ with Tyreeq Bakinson following his exit from Sheffield Wednesday and are hoping to see off interest from Charlton Athletic to land him, according to a report by FootballTransfers.

Wycombe Wanderers are keen to snap up the midfielder as they prepare for another year in League One. They finished 10th in the table in this past season and were 11 points off the play-offs in the end.

Bakinson, 25, has cut ties with Sheffield Wednesday this summer following the expiration of his contract at Hillsborough and will be weighing up his next move as a free agent. He spent the second-half of the last campaign on loan at Charlton Athletic.

In this latest update regarding his situation by FootballTransfers, the Addicks are eyeing a potential swoop to lure him back to The Valley on a permanent basis. However, the Chairboys appear to be leading the race for his signature.

Who is this?

Wycombe Wanderers could see Bakinson as someone to add more competition and depth to their midfield department.

He needs to join a new club where he is guaranteed regular first-team minutes.

The Londoner started his career at Luton Town and rose up through the academy ranks of the Hatters before leaving Kenilworth Road as a youngster to join Bristol City.

He then spent five years on the books at Ashton Gate and made 54 appearances in all competitions, chipping in with five goals.

The Robins loaned him out to Newport County, Plymouth Argyle and Ipswich Town to get some experience under his belt before he left on a permanent basis in 2022.

Sheffield Wednesday subsequently snapped up Bakinson and he played 42 matches for the Owls, helping them gain promotion from the third tier under their former manager Darren Moore in his first year.

He slipped out of favour last term though in the Championship and was loaned out to Charlton Athletic in January to get some game time.

Where next?

It is a surprise to see the Addicks linked with him again as he wasn’t a regular starter for them.

Nathan Jones may see him as ideal cover for his ranks though but faces competition from Wycombe Wanderers.

The Chairboys are eyeing new faces as they gear up for another season under Matt Bloomfield as they look to bridge the gap between them and the top six next year.
