Sheffield Wednesday fringe man wanted by Charlton Athletic, Stockport County

Sheffield Wednesday forward Mallik Wilks is a target for Charlton Athletic, Stockport County and Reading, according to Football Insider.

Sheffield Wednesday have had versatile forward Wilks on the books since the summer of 2022, bringing him in from Hull City after two-and-a-half-years on Humberside.

The former Leeds United and Barnsley man notched two goals and five assists in 26 games as the Owls won promotion from League One but injury problems limited his action.

Chances have been hard to come by this season too, with 18 appearances – many of which have been as a substitute – yielding just one goal.

It has brought his future into question coming into the summer transfer window and now, Football Insider claims that the 25-year-old has admirers in League One.

They state that the Sheffield Wednesday attacker is a target for Charlton Athletic, Stockport County and Reading ahead of next season. Wilks could leave on either a permanent or temporary basis and those keen will explore the possibility of bringing him in.

Who is this?

Better off elsewhere?

Danny Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday will be embarking on a busy summer transfer window as they gear up for the new season and you can’t help but feel new signings will only push Wilks further down the ranks.

It’s not been the easiest time at Hillsborough for the versatile attacker, so moving on elsewhere – be it permanently or on loan – could be ideal for him.

Charlton Athletic, Stockport County and Reading will all be intriguing options for Wilks to explore.

The Addicks are looking forward to an exciting season under Nathan Jones after an impressive turnaround after his arrival while the Royals will be looking to push further up the league after a season plagued by points deductions.

As for the Hatters, they’ll be determined to make a positive impact as League One football returns to Edgeley Park. A move for someone like Wilks will aid their bid to do so.

A League One star

Wilks has been a real standout in League One before, so it would not be surprised if that’s where he heads should a Sheffield Wednesday exit come to fruition.

He’s got 34 goals and 21 assists to his name in 106 third-tier outings. His return of 30 goals and 10 assists in 91 games for Hull City saw him play a key role in their promotion, also enjoying a strong stint at Doncaster Rovers.

Wilks will be determined to prove his abilities can translate to Championship level but even if it’s just for the time being, a return to League One could allow him to find his feet once more and get back to his dangerous best.

All of Charlton, Stockport and Reading could be good options for Wilks, but time will tell what comes of his situation.
