Leeds United, Blackburn Rovers set sights on Chelsea defender

Leeds United, Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End have all shown an interest in Chelsea defender Alfie Gilchrist, as per reporter Ben Jacobs.

Leeds United, Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End will all be playing Championship football once again in the 2024/25 campaign.

The Whites fell short in the play-off final, while Preston North End were unable to build on a strong start and finished 10th. Rovers meanwhile only stayed up on the final day.

All three sides will be determined to improve when the new season comes around, but they won’t be able to do so without the help of some fresh faces.

Now, it is claimed the Championship trio are keen on Alfie Gilchrist as a potential target.

Writing on X, reporter Ben Jacobs states that Chelsea could look to loan out the 20-year-old defender this summer. All of Leeds United, Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End have shown an interest with nothing advanced at this stage.

Gilchrist, who can play as a centre-back or right-back, made 17 first-team appearances for Chelsea this season. Most were as a substitute, but he still managed to chip in with a first senior goal.

Who is this?

Fruitful loan market

Leeds United, Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End have all made good use of the loan market in recent years and will be looking to do so once again this summer.

At Ewood Park, this season’s loan men weren’t quite the hits they had hoped for. However, with the likes of Jan Paul van Hecke, Jarrad Branthwaite, Harvey Elliott and Tyler Morton among the former Rovers stars, they’ll be keen to repeat that trick once more.

As for Preston, loan star Liam Millar was one of their standout players at Deepdale. He managed five goals and five assists in 35 Championship games for Ryan Lowe’s side.

Looking to next season

Gilchrist looks to be a talented defender and having made a decent impression in his Chelsea breakthrough, many will back him to find success in the Championship if a loan does await him.

Leeds United will be in need of new defenders as they look to win promotion back to the Premier League at the second time of asking, while Blackburn Rovers could be facing a shortage of centre-backs too with Kyle McFadzean’s deal up and Scott Wharton out for the long-term.

Preston have a few options already in the form of Jordan Storey, Liam Lindsay, Jack Whatmough and Andrew Hughes, though Greg Cunningham will be moving on and Patrick Bauer’s future may lay elsewhere too.

It would not be a surprise if Gilchrist draws further interest either, but a Championship loan could be ideal for his development as he looks to build on a fruitful breakthrough campaign.
