Chelsea coach set to land vacant League One job

Burton Albion are set to name Chelsea U21s boss Mark Robinson as their new manager, as per reporter Edmund Brack.

Burton Albion are on the hunt for a new boss following the confirmation of Martin Paterson’s exit.

Paterson, who previously worked as an assistant manager to Michael Duff, departed upon the expiry of his short-term deal, paving the way for the Brewers to bring in a new boss.

Now, it seems the League One club are zeroing in on their replacement.

Writing on X, reporter Edmund Brack states that current Chelsea U21s boss and former AFC Wimbledon manager Mark Robinson is set to land the vacant post as head coach of Burton Albion.

Robinson had worked as a youth coach with the Dons before spending a little over a year in charge from January 2021 to March 2022. Following his departure he took charge of Chelsea’s youngsters, where he has now been for almost two years.

Change afoot at the Pirelli

Paterson’s departure isn’t the only exit to have been confirmed by Burton Albion today (Friday).

They also announced that coaches Gary Mills and John Dreyer would be departing by mutual consent. Both were brought into the backroom team by former manager Dino Maamria, holding positions as first-team coach and assistant manager respectively.

The departures of Mills, Dreyer and manager Paterson looks to have paved the way for incoming boss Robinson to build his own coaching team as part of a new chapter at the Pirelli Stadium.

It will be hoped this can bring about some much-needed improvements having narrowly staved off a drop to League Two in the 2023/24 season.

Looking to next season

Burton Albion are in need of a rebuild under new management and that’s exactly what they’re in for. It looks as though Robinson will be the man to lead a vast overhaul of the playing squad.

Jamal Blackman, Toto Nsiala, Jake Caprice, Joe Powell, Deji Oshilaja, Charlie Lakin, Mustapha Carayol, Bobby Kamwa and Tom Hewlett will all be moving on from the Pirelli Stadium this summer.

It effectively wipes the slate clean for Robinson to come in and shape the squad to his liking with his own signings. Having spent time in Chelsea’s academy and been a mainstay in the AFC Wimbledon setup, he should boast a wide number of contacts that can help Burton freshen up the ranks for next season.

Further departures are inevitable on top of all those released, so quite the task lays ahead of the incoming management team.
