Gillingham and MK Dons target signs new contract with League Two side

Doncaster Rovers have tied up a new three-year deal for Luke Molyneux amid reported interest from Gillingham and MK Dons, as announced on their official club website.

Doncaster Rovers have managed to fend off attention from elsewhere to retain the services of the winger. They are preparing for another year in League Two following their loss in the play-offs at the semi-final stage to Crewe Alexandra.

Molyneux, 26, was due to become a free agent in late June on his previous deal. According to reporter Pete O’Rourke on X, he emerged on the radar of Gillingham and MK Dons this summer.

However, they will have to look elsewhere for targets now. The attacker has told Donny’s official club website: “I’m buzzing to be here and re-sign. I’ve been in constant contact with the gaffer (Grant McCann) and Cliff (Byrne) and I’m happy to finally get it done. You see how good we were at the end of the season. We’ve definitely got that to go again next year and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens.”

He was a regular for the Black Cats at various different youth levels and went on to play 13 times for their first-team as a youngster, as well as having loan spells away from the Stadium of Light at Gateshead and Hartlepool United to get some experience under his belt.

The latter then snapped him up on a permanent basis in 2019 and he went on to become a key player at Victoria Park.

Molyneux fired 18 goals in 111 outings for the Pools during his time there and helped them win promotion from the National League in his third year.

What next for Gillingham and MK Dons?

Gillingham have picked former Cambridge United boss Mark Bonner as their replacement for Stephen Clemence and he has delved into the transfer market to land striker Elliott Nevitt from Crewe Alexandra as they hunt for more additions.

As for MK Dons, they reached the play-offs like Doncaster Rovers did but lost to eventual winners Crawley Town.

They have snapped up Connor Lemonheigh-Evans after his exit from Stockport County as an alternative to Molyneux.
