3 players who could move on from Bolton Wanderers following promotion disappointment

Bolton Wanderers fell short of promotion glory again this year but will be determined to fight for it once more when the 2024/25 campaign comes around.

Bolton Wanderers will be playing League One football again next season as a result.

They made it to the play-off final after avenging last year’s defeat to Barnsley in the semi-final, but were beaten by Oxford United at Wembley Stadium to end a gruelling season in disappointing fashion.

The hope will be that the Trotters can maintain much of the core group that got Ian Evatt and co to this stage. However, there are certainly players who could draw admiring glances this summer.

With that said, here are three players Bolton Wanderers could see move on after their promotion disappointment…

George Thomason

Thomason penned a long-term deal with Wanderers last summer amid strong interest from Bristol City.

However, after their failure to step up to the Championship, Thomason may well be the subject of revived interest. His contract situation means the Trotter are in a strong position over his future but with the midfielder enjoying another strong campaign, clubs may not hesitate to cough up the cash to bring him in.

Thomason notched six goals and 10 assists in 52 games across all competitions. He’s developed brilliantly since progressing through the Bolton Wanderers ranks and a move to a higher league may not be far away.

Dion Charles

Charles missed a chunk of the season through a knee injury but still managed 20 goals in 44 games. Had he not spent that spell on the sidelines, you’d have fancied him to hit an even higher total.

The striker has two years left on his Bolton Wanderers contract but having starred in League One for a while now, the 28-year-old may find a Championship opportunity tempting if it crops up.

Given his goalscoring record in the third-tier, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Charles drew interest. That could make him tricky to hold onto.

Who is this?

Aaron Morley

Last but not least is another player who still has plenty of time on his Bolton Wanderers deal but with only 10 of his 37 League One appearances coming as a starter, Morley may find an opportunity to start more regularly intriguing.

His return of five goals and eight assists will have people wondering just what he could conjure up with more minutes too.

Morley will perhaps taste more regular starts under Evatt with Paris Maghoma’s loan ending or if the aforementioned Thomason moves on. However, he would be a great signing for clubs of a similar level and if they can offer more minutes, it could be a good opportunity for the 24-year-old to take.
