Recently departed Blackpool man links up with Neil Lennon’s new club

Iain Brunskill has been named as Rapid Bucuresti’s assistant manager following his exit from Blackpool, as announced by their official club website.

The coach has recently cut ties with Blackpool following the end of the 2023/24 season. They finished 8th in the League One table and were three points off the play-offs.

Brunskill, 57, joined the Tangerines in June last year to reunite with Neil Critchley. However, he has left his position after 12 months and will now be embarking on a new challenge abroad.

Rapid Bucuresti have confirmed on their website that he has joined their new-look coaching team. He will operate under former Celtic, Hibernian and Bolton Wanderers boss Neil Lennon following his recent surprise appointment.

The Romanian side have been linked with a swoop for midfielder Greg Docherty this summer after his release by Hull City, as per the Daily Record, but face competition from Legia Warsaw.

Departed Blackpool man takes on new challenge

Bringing in Brunskill is a shrewd move by Lennon as he looks to bring success to Rapid Bucuresti.

The Lancashire-born man is an experienced coach and has worked overseas before.

He spent his playing days as a midfielder for Bury, Leek Town and Hednesford Town after starting out in Liverpool’s academy.

Brunskill started his coaching career at Anfield and worked a decade as their Assistant Academy Technical Director.

He left Merseyside and worked as the number two to Paul Ince and Sam Allardyce at Blackburn Rovers.

Maltese outfit Floriana handed him a 10-game contract in 2013 in his first and only head coach role to date.

He has since had stints at the FA, Bolton Wanderers, Shanghai SIPG, Molde, the Chinese FA and Norwich City.

Neil Critchley’s assistant

Critchley first brought Brunskill to Blackpool in 2022 and he later followed him to QPR before the pair returned to the Seasiders.

The Tangerines will be aiming for promotion to the Championship again next term and have a big summer ahead as they look to bolster their ranks.

Meanwhile, Brunskill will be looking to use his expertise to help Lennon ease into his new role at Rapid Bucuresti. They finished 6th in Liga I last term and they haven’t won the title since 2003.
