3 managers Burton Albion should target amid Martin Paterson exit claims

Burton Albion have been under the lead of Martin Paterson since January but it seems change is afoot at the Pirelli Stadium.

Burton Albion only just maintained their League One status in the 2023/24 campaign.

The Brewers finished 20th in the table, only two points clear of the relegation zone amid valiant battles to stave off the drop from Cheltenham Town and Fleetwood Town.

Many had called for change earlier but now, it is said that Martin Paterson is set to leave the club.

It puts Burton Albion in the market for a new manager. They’ll be sure to consider numerous options as they look to a brighter future and here, we put forward three bosses worth considering…

Neill Collins

Collins was sacked by Barnsley with just one game left in the season. It had been a tough season at Oakwell for the manager following his arrival, but he still had them on the brink of the play-offs.

At their best, the Tykes were electric under Collins. He’ll be hoping for another shot in the EFL and he might just get it at Burton Albion.

The expectations would be a bit lower, and that may aid him. With the right recruitment though, he could take Burton up the table after his learning curve at Oakwell.

Joe Edwards

Another boss who will be eager for another shot is former Chelsea and England coach Edwards.

He endured a short, challenging stint in charge of Millwall before being sacked and replaced by Neil Harris.

Nevertheless, he remains a talented coach with good links in the game. A chance at a level below the Championship with a club like Burton Albion could be ideal for him if he wants to give management another shot.

As another out of work manager, you would think this would be a feasible appointment for the Brewers too.

Gary Smith

Last but not least is a slightly more left-field option, but it could yet be an intriguing one to consider.

Englishman Gary Smith has spent the vast majority of his managerial career in the United States, first leading Colorado Rapids before his first and only stint in England with Stevenage.

From there, he went back to America and ended up becoming Nashville SC boss in April 2017. He led them all the way through to May of this year having overseen their transition from the USL to the MLS.

Another shot in his native England could be intriguing for Smith so Burton Albion would be wise to bring him into their thinking after his long spell in the MLS.
