Reporter makes intriguing comment over potential Birmingham City move for Bolton Wanderers boss

Birmingham City have mentioned Bolton Wanderers boss Ian Evatt in their search for a new boss, but he’s unlikely to get an interview, as per reporter Alan Nixon.

Birmingham City will be joining Bolton Wanderers in League One next season.

The Blues suffered a disastrous relegation from the Championship while the Trotters made it to the League One play-off final, only to be comfortably beaten by Oxford United at Wembley Stadium.

The relegated side are on the hunt for a new boss too. Plenty of names have been linked with the St. Andrew’s vacancy since Tony Mowbray stood down, with Alex Neil among those said to have been in talks with the club.

Now, an intriguing comment has emerged over a potential Birmingham City swoop for Bolton Wanderers boss Ian Evatt.

When quizzed on the matter on X, reporter Alan Nixon stated that the 42-year-old’s name has ‘come up’ in conversations over their next boss, only to add he’s not sure if Evatt ‘gets an interview’.

Evatt has been at the helm at Bolton Wanderers since July 2020. He led them up from League Two and has had them on the brink of a Championship return, only to come up short again this year.

Two years remain on his current contract with the club.

Who is this?

Would Evatt go?

Time will tell if anything further comes from Birmingham City’s potential interest in Evatt, even with Nixon saying he’s uncertain over a potential interview.

The former Barrow boss has impressed in his time in the dugout and chairman Sharon Brittain recently discussed how Evatt has turned down chances to leave Bolton Wanderers for clubs in higher leagues where more money is on offer.

With that said, it would be a big surprise to see him move on from the Trotters to join a club now in the same league as them.

Bolton Wanderers and Birmingham City may well be promotion rivals next season. After coming up short this year, the Trotters will be determined to leave no doubt by finishing in the top two, though time will tell if they do so with Evatt at the helm.

The Blues’ hunt

Birmingham City will be casting a wide net in their hunt for a new boss.

It’s of the utmost importance that they get this one right. They need a manager who can lead them back to the Championship and restore some confidence in the board after their abysmal decision to sack John Eustace ultimately led to their relegation.

Faith in the board is still strong given their ambitious plans for the future but another poor managerial appointment will surely bring their decision making on the football side of things into question.

Time will tell who takes the reins at St. Andrew’s but with Evatt’s name brought up, it would be a surprise if he swapped Bolton Wanderers for a league rival after turning down opportunities in the Championship.
