Portsmouth are on the lookout for new signings as they prepare for a step up to the Championship.

Plenty of transfer targets will be in mind on the south coast with another busy summer expected. A number of players have been linked with Pompey and amongst those mentioned is Reading midfielder Michael Craig.

However, conflicting claims regarding those links have now emerged.

Writing on X, BBC South reporter Andrew Moon has played down the rumours of a Portsmouth move for Craig, who is a 21-year-old defensive midfielder.

Mousinho and co will be in the market for midfield reinforcements this summer. But, it looks as though Craig is not on the list as the former Tottenham Hotspur youngster enters the final 12 months on his contract with the Royals.

A busy summer awaits

Portsmouth have let go of a number of first-team players while several loan stars are also heading back to their parent clubs. It means plenty of additions will be needed at Fratton Park.

Who is this?

Regardless of that though, Pompey should be confident in their recruitment after impressive business this time last year set the foundations for their impressive promotion charge.

A similar level of success will hopefully be enough for the club to maintain their Championship status, which is sure to be the ultimate goal despite the exciting trajectory of Mousinho’s side.

Staying at Reading?

For Craig, it could be that Reading is the best place for him to be as he continues his development.

He had become a regular for Ruben Selles in the middle of the season but lost his place in the side over the final months, so he’ll be determined to reclaim his place in the XI ahead of the new campaign.

A year remains on his contract, so it could be that he attracts admirers. Reading may well take the chance to cash in if it arises, but it looks as though it won’t be Portsmouth that offer them a chance to do so.
