Mansfield Town striker wanted by League Two clubs

Mansfield Town boss Nigel Clough has said they have received a ‘couple’ of enquiries from League Two clubs for James Gale already this summer.

Mansfield Town are poised to loan out the attacker for next season as they look to help boost his development. They are preparing for life in League One following their promotion along with Stockport County, Wrexham and Crawley Town.

Gale, 22, remains under contract at Field Mill ahead of the next campaign. However, he is likely to head out the exit door on a temporary basis along with George Cooper.

Clough has said, as per a report by The Chad: “The young lads – James Gale and George Cooper – are all sorted for next season and we have an option on a new deal for Owen Mason, who is out on loan at the moment.

“The other two will be going out on loan as well next season, George Cooper hopefully to the National League and for James Gale we have a couple of enquiries already from League Two clubs which would be ideal development for him.”

A loan exit back to the fourth tier would be a sensible move for Gale and would give him more first-team opportunities.

His chances of regular game time at Mansfield Town in the next campaign are slim following their recent signing of Lee Gregory from Sheffield Wednesday.

Gale has been on the books of the Stags since September 2021. Prior to his switch to Nottinghamshire, he had spells at Derby County and Long Eaton United.

He has made 48 appearances in all competitions for Clough’s side to date and has chipped in with seven goals.

The striker played 26 matches last term as Mansfield Town finished in 3rd position, finding the net on three occasions.

Gale also had a loan spell away at Guiseley in non-league a couple of years ago to get some experience under his belt and fired in four goals in 11 outings.

Mansfield Town’s summer ahead

Mansfield Town will be looking to add to their ranks over the next couple of months to ensure they are prepared for life in the league above.

They recently announced their retained list and confirmed that Anthony Hartigan, Callum Johnson, John-Joe O’Toole and Louie Turner have been released. Meanwhile, defender Lewis Brunt has gone back to Championship champions Leicester City following the end of his loan spell.
