Birmingham City midfielder sets sights on exit, top-flight club keen

Birmingham City midfielder Jordan James is keen on a move away from the club with Serie A side Atalanta’s interest persisting, as per Fabrizio Romano.

Birmingham City academy graduate James has been in the spotlight for some time, catching the eye with his Championship performances since breaking into the first-team.

At 19, the midfielder is already a 10-time Wales international and has played 105 times for the Blues. 47 of those appearances came last season, managing an impressive eight goals in the process.

James has had strong interest from elsewhere before with Italian outfit Atalanta seeing bids rejected in the January transfer window.

Now, with Birmingham City heading for League One, it seems their interest is persisting.

Writing on X, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has said Atalanta remain on James’ trail with the player keen on moving away. He’s interested in starting a new chapter elsewhere after the Blues previously turned down offers for his services, Romano says.

Heading elsewhere?

With a player of James’ talents on the books as Birmingham City head down to League One, it seems an inevitability that he moves on this summer.

He’s got a vast amount of senior experience at club and international level at such a young age and looks destined for a bright future in the game. As a player on an upward trajectory, it seems highly unlikely that he drops to the third-tier next season.

Many might have expected him to move onto a top-flight club even if the Blues stayed up, but relegation all but confirms his fate.

Atalanta have been long-term admirers but it would not be a surprise if other sides join the race for his signature. There is a shrewd deal to be done here, and clubs should be taking notice.

Who is this?

The summer ahead

It looks set to be a big summer of change at Birmingham City with key players sure to depart.

A new manager will be coming in too after the confirmation that Tony Mowbray will not be returning. The next appointment has to be right as well, as the poor decision making of the powers that be at St. Andrew’s have ultimately led them to this poor position.

As a new boss comes in, it seems as though top talents like James will be snapped up.

It will be a shame to see them move on, but the transfers are necessary ones for their careers and it will help the Blues raise funds for reinvestment.
