Middlesbrough ‘likely’ to let 25-year-old leave, report suggests

Middlesbrough are ‘likely’ to cut ties with left-back Hayden Coulson this summer, as detailed in a report by TeesideLive.

Middlesbrough could let the defender head out the exit door on a permanent basis in the upcoming transfer window as they prepare for another year in the Championship. He spent the second-half of the past campaign on loan at Blackpool in League One.

Coulson, 25, is now due to return to the Riverside Stadium for pre-season following his spell at Bloomfield Road but his long-term future with Michael Carrick’s side is up in the air at this moment in time. His contract expires in June 2025 meaning he still has a little over 12 months left on his deal.

However, he has slipped down the pecking order and according to TeesideLive, most signs point towards him heading out the exit door for good at some point over the next couple of months.

Who is this?

Middlesbrough exit on the cards

Coulson has been on the books at Middlesbrough for his whole career to date and rose up through their academy ranks.

He was a regular for the second tier outfit at various youth levels as a youngster and has made 57 appearances for their first-team so far, chipping in with three goals.

The Gateshead-born man has also had temporary stints away at St Mirren, Cambridge United, Ipswich Town, Peterborough United and Aberdeen in the past to get some experience under his belt.

Blackpool came calling in the last January window and he was given the green light to link up with the Tangerines under Neil Critchley.

He enjoyed plenty of game time with the Seasiders and made 17 outings for them as they narrowly missed out on the play-offs. It remains to be seen whether they would be keen on luring him back.

What next for Middlesbrough?

Middlesbrough will be aiming for promotion to the Premier League next term and will have the chance to add more quality to their ranks in the meantime.

Parting ways with Coulson would be a shrewd move as it would free up space and funds in their ranks to bring in other reinforcements in different positions.

A change of scene would do him good and his time with Boro has turned a bit stale now. Nevertheless, his recent spell at Blackpool will have done him good and boosted his confidence to put him in the shop window.
