Free agent joins new club following Wrexham exit

Carlisle United have snapped up Aaron Hayden following his recent exit from Wrexham, as announced by their official club website.

Carlisle United have lured the defender back to Brunton Park on a free transfer as they prepare for life back in League Two. He has penned a two-year deal with the Cumbrian outfit.

Hayden, 27, saw his contract at Wrexham expire at the end of last season after they were promoted from the fourth tier. He has since been weighing up his options and has decided to move back to his former team.

The Cumbrians’ boss Paul Simpson has said, as per the official club website: “We’re delighted that Aaron has agreed to return to us, he comes back to the club with more experience under his belt and two promotions. I think he’ll be a great addition to the group.

“As soon as we knew he was going to be available, he was a player we targeted early. We’re delighted to have been able to get this agreed ahead of other clubs.”

Departed Wrexham man joins Carlisle United

Carlisle United have boosted their defensive department by bringing in Hayden and he is a shrewd addition.

He will give Simpson more competition and depth at the back and he is someone who knows the club inside out already.

The Londoner was on the books of the Cumbrians from 2019 to 2021 and made 73 appearances in all competitions, chipping in with eight goals from the back.

Wrexham then managed to lure him down to the National League and he helped them win promotion back to the Football League in his second tier.

Hayden went on to play 95 games for the Red Dragons altogether and found the net on an impressive 20 occasions during his time in Wales. However, he saw his game time dry up in this past campaign and Phil Parkinson opted against extending his stay.

He played for Chelsea and Wolves at academy level before having loan spells away from the latter at Newport County and Bromley as a youngster before first joining Carlisle United.

Carlisle United’s plans

The Cumbrians’ recruitment this time last year wasn’t adequate enough for them to compete at League One level.

They need to learn their lessons from that and acquiring Hayden ticks all the boxes at first glance.

Carlisle United will be aiming for an immediate promotion back to the third tier and he has proven himself at that level in the past.
