Bristol City midfielder emerges as Preston North End transfer target

Bristol City midfielder Joe Williams is a Preston North End transfer target as his deal at Ashton Gate winds down, as per Bristol Live.

Bristol City are in for a busy few months as Liam Manning leads his first summer transfer window at the club. New signings are a must if they’re to build on a positive end to the 2023/24 campaign.

The Robins will be hoping to bring in some fresh faces but there could also be some notable departures at Ashton Gate.

Among those with doubts surrounding the future is midfielder Joe Williams. He played 45 times across all competitions, chipping in with six assists in the process.

However, his deal is up this summer, and he’s yet to put pen to paper on a new contract.

Now, Bristol Live reports he has rival Championship interest. Preston North End are among the second-tier sides keen on signing the 27-year-old from Bristol City, it is said.

Williams has been made what the Robins believe to be a competitive offer, but the chance to make a move to a new club could prove tempting.

Who is this?

On the move?

Williams is coming up on four years with Bristol City. He’s played in 108 games in that time, with injury problems previously limiting his involvement.

This season has shown what he can bring to the side though, even if he isn’t necessarily the ideal fit for Liam Manning’s midfield. The fact he offers something different from the Robins’ other midfielders arguably increases his value.

With his deal up and an offer on the table, the ball is firmly in Williams’ court.

He can choose to remain with Bristol City to battle for a place in Manning’s side going forward, or he can opt against penning new terms to start afresh elsewhere. If he does decide on the latter, the former Everton man is not short of options with Preston among his Championship admirers.

A welcome addition at Preston?

The report states that Preston boss Ryan Lowe views Williams as his ideal Championship midfielder. If he’s made the player aware of that, then the manager may well stand a good chance of getting his man.

In terms of the existing midfield options at Deepdale, a new signing or two may be needed.

Star man and club captain Alan Browne is yet to decide on his contract fate with a deal on the table. They still have Ben Whiteman, Ryan Ledson, Ali McCann, Duane Holmes and youngster Noah Mawene among those as options, but someone like Williams could make for a welcome reinforcement.

It seems Lowe is a big fan of the Bristol City man, but time will tell what decision he comes to over his future.
