Notts County keen on loan swoop for Sunderland youngster

Notts County are keen on a loan move for Sunderland goalkeeper Matty Young, according to reporter Alan Nixon on his Patreon.

Notts County have identified the young stopper as a potential option for them between the sticks next season. They are gearing up for another year in League Two as they look to make a push for promotion to League One.

Young, 17, is highly-rated by Sunderland and they have a big decision to make regarding what to do with him next amid interest from lower down the Football League. He spent time in the National League North in this past campaign at Darlington to get some experience under his belt.

In this latest update regarding his situation by journalist Nixon on his Patreon page, the Magpies are interested in luring him to Meadow Lane on a temporary basis. They have just finished in 14th place in the table under Stuart Maynard.

A switch to League Two would be the next natural progression for Young following his stint in the sixth tier at Darlington.

He joined Darlo in February to help boost his development and is now back at the Stadium of Light.

has been on the books at Sunderland for his whole career to date and has risen up through their youth ranks.

He has been a regular for the North East outfit at various youth levels and is still waiting on his first-team debut. The prospect was handed his first professional deal in November running until June 2026.

Notts County’s summer ahead

Notts County moved quickly to publish their retained list and have confirmed that Jim O’Brien, Richard Brindley, John Bostock, Aden Baldwin and Tobi Adebayo have been released.

They have an important few months ahead now on the transfer front as they look to bolster their ranks and challenge at the top end of the division.

Young’s name is the latest to be linked with the Magpies with bringing in a new option in goal something they are eager to address pretty swiftly.
