Update emerges regarding Barnsley links to MK Dons boss

MK Dons boss Mike Williamson is ‘not’ one of Barnsley’s main candidates as they hunt for a new permanent manager, as detailed in a report by the Barnsley Chronicle.

MK Dons’ manager has been linked with the Oakwell vacancy over recent times, as per reporter Alan Nixon on his Patreon page. However, it appears the League One side are pursuing other targets at the moment.

The Yorkshire outfit parted ways with Neill Collins near the end of last season and placed Martin Devaney in caretaker charge. He led them into the play-offs but they were beaten at the semi-finals stage over two legs by Bolton Wanderers in the end.

In this latest update regarding their managerial search, the Barnsley Chronicle have cooled their links to Williamson. They claim Daniel Stendel, who is currently back at Hannover 96 in his native Germany, has emerged as a contender for the vacancy now.

Who is this?

It is expected to be a summer of transition at Barnsley and whoever their next head coach is will have a big job on their hands.

They have a number of players soon to be out of contract like Herbie Kane, Jordan Williams and Devante Cole, whilst loanees like Liam Roberts and John McAtee have gone back to their parent clubs so there will be quite a few gaps to plug.

MK Dons moved for Williamson in October whilst they were sat down in 16th place in the League Two table.

He inspired the Buckinghamshire outfit to an upturn in form and they ended up finishing in the play-offs. However, they were beaten 8-1 on aggregate by Crawley Town and another year in the fourth tier now beckons.

The 40-year-old spent his playing days as a defender for the likes of Southampton, Wycombe Wanderers, Watford, Portsmouth, Newcastle United, Wolves and Oxford United.

He was handed his first manager’s job by Gateshead and guided the North East outfit to promotion from the National League North during his time there before MK Dons swooped in for him.

Barnsley latest

Barnsley need to get their next appointment right as they look to mount another promotion push to the Championship.

Williamson could do with another year with the Dons to continue the work he has been doing there and a switch to the Tykes at this stage would probably be too soon for him.

Stendel seems a more sensible option as he has been with them before and knows what it takes to get out of their league.
