Leicester City keeping tabs on 22-year-old amid impressive Serie A breakthrough

Leicester City are among the clubs keeping tabs on Lazio goalkeeper Christos Mandas, as per Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport (via Calcio Mercato).

Leicester City are heading back to the Premier League but before they embark on top-flight football once more, they are facing an important summer transfer window.

While promoted clubs’ main focus is building a squad capable of staying in the division, the Foxes are in a poor position with PSR regulations and as one penalty awaits, they must sell players to avoid further reprimand.

However, it seems the club are still keeping an eye out for possible additions, with a new link emerging from reports in Italy.

Corriere dello Sport claims that Leicester City are among the admirers of Lazio goalkeeper Christos Mandas. Manager Enzo Maresca is said to have requested information regarding the 22-year-old shot-stopper.

Bologna boss Thiago Motta may try to sign him if he goes to Juventus, while Fiorentina may revive their previous interest, it is added.

The report goes onto say that Lazio will want no less than €15m (around £12.8m) for Mandas.

Who is this?

A steep asking price?

Mandas has seen his stock rise impressively in recent months. Having first being signed as a backup by Lazio, he has impressed since coming into the starting XI amid goalkeeper injuries.

Six clean sheets and only nine goals conceded in 12 games has seen him become a quick favourite in Italy but at a rumoured €15m, you have to feel he could prove too costly for Leicester City.

Perhaps early player sales could pave the way for the Foxes to part with fees like that for additions later in the window. By that point though, it could be that the sought-after Mandas is snapped up by another club.

At 22, he looks like a bright prospect for the future and having only signed on a long-term deal last summer, Lazio are well within their sights to demand €15m for their breakthrough ace.

Do Leicester City need Mandas?

That valuation begs the question, do Leicester City need Mandas? And arguably, the answer is no.

They have Mads Hermansen as a reliable no.1 and one who can hold down the starting spot for years to come. For that reason, spending big on someone to compete with him, especially given the Foxes’ financial situation, might be a bit of an error.

A new backup may be needed but Maresca and co can look to far shrewder options than Mandas. The free agent market is often a good one for goalkeepers.

Mandas is a good player and a player on the up no doubt. However, in Leicester City’s situation, it would be a fairly odd signing at the reported fee.
