Opinion: Wrexham should offer 35-goal/assist star EFL chance amid strong interest

Wrexham are heading up to League One and they’ll be hoping to compete at the right end of the table as they continue their rise up the divisions.

Wrexham have put their financial muscle to use in recent years and it has played a big part in their rise from the National League to League One in just two seasons.

While the playing field levels a bit more as they step up to the third-tier, expect the Red Dragons to maintain a financial advantage over many of the other sides in the league. That should put them in a strong position to battle with League One rivals for statement signings.

Among the players of interest to League One clubs is Altrincham playmaker Chris Conn-Clarke. Peterborough United have seen a bid rejected while Mansfield Town are also admirers.

Ipswich Town and Portsmouth have also been linked, but their promotions to the Premier League and Championship respectively perhaps means their sights will be set a big higher.

As clubs look sure to battle it out for Conn-Clarke after his stunning National League campaign, Wrexham should be looking to muscle in and win the fight for his signature.

Who is this?

Ready for a big step up

Wrexham have often recruited from higher leagues when signing new stars but in the case of Conn-Clarke, they should make an exception and return to the National League for one of the league’s most influential performers.

His return of 23 goals and 12 assists in the 2023/24 campaign saw him play a huge role in Altrincham’s play-off charge and on many occasions he looked a level or two above National League opponents.

That has piqued EFL interests and Wrexham should be among those to take note.

He could come into Phil Parkinson’s side and become an influential midfielder alongside existing stars such as Elliot Lee and like much of the Red Dragons’ squad, he looks like a player capable of starring even beyond League One level in the years to come.

At 22, he’s an asset for the present and future and even at a steep transfer fee, it could be a worthwhile investment for Wrexham as they look to put their deep pockets to use.

Fending off the competition

Interest from clubs in higher leagues or perhaps abroad could make a Conn-Clarke chase trickier for Wrexham but up against sides in the same league, you have to fancy their chances.

Peterborough United could be a stern opponent in the battle for his signature given their status as a promotion-chaser most seasons. Not only that, but they’re a top recruiter from non-league football, with several going onto bigger and better things after developing under their watch.

The ambitious project at Wrexham and club’s trajectory combined with their finances should put them in a great position to fight for his signature though.
