Middlesbrough man attracting interest from elsewhere, contract up in 2026

St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson has said they would ‘love’ to bring back Middlesbrough goalkeeper Zach Hemming for next season.

Middlesbrough loaned the stopper to the Scottish Premiership side in this past campaign and he has since caught the eye above the border. He made 44 appearances in all competitions for the Buddies, 33 of which came in the league.

Hemming, 24, is due to return to the Riverside Stadium this summer for pre-season and his parent club will have a decision to make regarding his immediate future.

St Mirren manager Robinson has said, as per a report by the Daily Record: “We’ve been in constant dialogue with Middlesbrough. My head of recruitment Martin Foyle, who has been fantastic for me, is in constant dialogue with all the players who we’re trying to get back.

“We’d love to have Zach back again. That might not be an early decision. Middlesbrough might want him back in pre-season. He’ll have a lot of people looking at him.”

Hemming is under contract at Middlesbrough until June 2026 meaning they are under no pressure to sell him permanently anytime soon and he could still play a part for them in the future.

They need to weigh up their goalkeeping options over the next couple of months. Seny Dieng has been their number one in this past campaign following his arrival from fellow second tier outfit QPR 12 months ago, with Tom Glover as his number two.

Veteran ‘keeper Jamie Jones sees his contract expire at the end of next month, as does Liam Roberts following his temporary spell in League One at Barnsley.

Hemming has been on the books at Middlesbrough for his whole career to date and has risen up through their academy ranks.

The Bishop Auckland-born man has never played for the first-team but has represented them at Under-18 and Under-21 levels.

As well as his stint at St Mirren, he has also had loan spells away at Darlington, Hartlepool United, Blyth Spartans and Kilmarnock to boost his development.

What next for Middlesbrough?

Middlesbrough missed out on the play-offs this past season and will be looking to mount a promotion push next time around.

They are yet to publish their retained list as they prepare for another year under Michael Carrick.

Boro need to consider Hemming’s future as St Mirren look to lure him back to Paisley.
