EFL side set sights on departing Charlton Athletic man

MK Dons are keen to sign Jack Payne following his exit from Charlton Athletic this summer, according to a report by The Real EFL.

MK Dons want to snap up the attacking midfielder on a permanent basis following his loan spell with them in this past season. Mike Williamson’s side lost in the play-offs over two legs to Crawley Town and have another year in League Two coming up.

Payne, 29, will officially leave The Valley when his contract expires at the end of next month and will become a free agent. He was given the green light to join the Dons on a temporary basis to get some more game time under his belt.

In this latest update regarding his situation by The Real EFL, the fourth tier outfit are ready to swoop in and lure him back to Buckinghamshire. The player will be able to weigh up his options though.

Charlton Athletic signed Payne in 2022 and he went on to make 57 appearances for the Addicks in all competitions, chipping in with seven goals.

He then found the net on seven occasions for MK Dons in 44 outings to help them reach the top seven.

Cutting ties with him has freed up space and funds in the Addicks’ squad to bring in other reinforcements as they prepare for their first full season under the guidance of Nathan Jones.

The London-born man started his career at Southend United and broke into their first-team as a youngster before Huddersfield Town lured him to Yorkshire in 2016.

Payne was part of the Terriers’ team promoted to the Premier League against the odds in his first year at the John Smith’s Stadium under David Wagner. However, he was loaned out the following two years to Oxford United, Blackburn Rovers and Bradford City to get some more experience.

He then had permanent stints at Lincoln City and Swindon Town before linking up with Charlton Athletic.

What next for free agent?

Payne could still play at League One level so has a big decision to make on where to go next as MK Dons apparently eye a reunion.

He would be an eye-catching addition by the Dons if they were able to get him and they are likely to be battling it out at the top end of the table next term despite their play-off disappointment.
